NTUC Health Active Ageing Centre @ bukit panjang Rocks like a star
Project Type: Healthcare / Elder Care
Client: NTUC Health
Location: 2 Pasir Panjang Ring Road #02-06, Singapore
Scope: Interior & Facade Design + Spatial Planning
Theme: Rockstar Chic
Rockstar Chic at a hawker centre
D’Perception Ritz designed the NTUC Health Active Ageing Centre Bukit Panjang, a vibrant senior community hub located within Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre in Singpore. The 2,100 sq ft facility reimagines the traditional active ageing centre through a bold “Rock Star Chic” concept that celebrates singing, performance and social participation among seniors.
Reframing Active Ageing
Rather than adopting a conventional institutional aesthetic, the centre embraces a bold “Rock Star Chic” concept — positioning seniors as confident, creative and socially engaged individuals. Anchored by a dedicated performance stage, the space celebrates singing and entertainment as powerful tools for connection and self-expression.
Circular lighting features, record-inspired motifs and analog speaker details create a cohesive visual language. Enhanced vibrant hue lighting can be activated during events, transforming the centre from a relaxed daytime lounge into an energetic performance venue.
Designing with Community Context
Situated in a high-footfall hawker centre, the design responds strategically to its surroundings. A bold glass facade—announcing the singing and performance theme— enhances visibility and approachability, lowering psychological barriers and inviting spontaneous participation. The centre becomes not just a service facility, but a destination within everyday community life.
Maximising Value Within a Compact Footprint
Despite its compact footprint, the centre accommodates a performance area, lounge spaces, activity zones, screening room, kitchen and caregiver station. Movable furniture and thoughtful zoning allow seamless transitions between workshops, performances and group activities — maximising usability without compromising comfort.
Empathy Through Design
Nostalgic elements evoke familiarity and belonging, while open sightlines and streamed natural daylight create warmth and visual spaciousness. The result is an environment that supports dignity, confidence and social engagement.
Glamour Through Special Lighting
Special lighting plays a defining role in shaping the centre’s identity and experience. Beyond functional illumination, dynamic lighting systems introduce vibrant hues that can be activated during events and performances, transforming the space into an energetic, party-like environment. This layered lighting approach allows the centre to transition seamlessly from a relaxed daytime community lounge into a lively social venue, reinforcing the Rockstar theme and encouraging participation, expression and shared enjoyment among seniors.
Cost-Effective & Mission-Effective Solution
As a community facility, the project prioritised cost-effective design solutions that allow NTUC Health to preserve resources for service delivery and programme development. Instead of removing structural constraints, a pre-existing central pillar was transformed into a design feature. It is dressed with asymmetrically cantilevered lighting, creating a dramatic focal point that anchors the Rockstar theme while maximising the existing structure.
This approach demonstrates how thoughtful design can achieve strong visual identity and experiential impact while remaining responsible with resources.
